Actions for the Week of 3/9/25
Protect Social Security
Donald Trump repeatedly promised that he would not cut Social Security. That was a lie. Trump and Musk are planning to fire 7000 SSA employees, and leaks from within the agency suggest they are planning to cut the workforce by 50% and close many field offices around the country. According to the DOGE site, the leases for 45 offices have already been terminated. These cuts to an already understaffed agency will almost certainly lead to the delay, disruption, and denial of benefits. Former Social Security commissioner Martin O’Malley is now warning these staff firings could lead to an interruption of people getting their benefits within the next 30-90 days.
Call or email your Senators and House Rep demanding they do everything they can to stop cuts to Social Security. Write your own script or use the ones below. Find contact info for your Senators here and for your House Rep here.
I am deeply alarmed about DOGE’s attacks on the Social Security Administration. Firing up to half of the staff and closing field offices means benefits will be delayed, disrupted and denied. The former Commissioner is saying we’re going to see the system collapse and an interruption of benefits within the next 30 to 90 days. This is an emergency! Please stop Musk now. Get him out of our government. He’s destroying it. Thanks.
If your Rep is a Republican, consider adding the following:
I understand that Republicans aren’t speaking up because they fear for their personal safety, but enough is enough. We’re all afraid. If you're not brave enough to speak out against what’s happening, you should resign. Thanks.
Protect the Department of Education
Trump and Musk have made it clear they will try to realize the longstanding Republican dream of eliminating the Department of Education and funneling more money to corporate schools. Trump’s new education secretary, Linda McMahon, has vowed to eliminate the entire agency and put herself out of a job. Trump is preparing an executive order instructing her to do just that.
Dismantling the Department of Education would impact Title I funding for low-income school districts, Individuals With Disabilities Act (IDEA) funding to support students with disabilities, anti-discrimination protections offered by the Department’s Office for Civil Rights, oversight for for-profit universities and the administration of federal student loans. The costs for America’s public school kids would be devastating, especially those in low-income communities and those with disabilities. There are also serious concerns about whether or not students will be able to access financial aid next year if Trump and company continue their war. The Department of Education was created by Congress in 1979 and elimination of it would require Congressional approval.
Follow the link below to send a pre-scripted letter to your Members of Congress telling them to vote against any bill that eliminates the Department of Education.
